I forgot that I had been using a gift card for a couple of months and it ran out which prevented me from using Claude till it was resolved. And for a very brief moment fear came over me. What if I didn't have the money to keep using Max pro? I have gotten so far down the rabbit hole on not one but two projects that if I had to roll up my sleeves and code again ...I'd be crying I think. But what really disturbs me is, what if I could no longer afford? At some point I would need to see an ROI though. I find that I am using Claude Desktop (Opus 4.6) to do architectural reviews on decisions that Claude Code makes. Yeah, I know, they are the same model. But the system prompt they both use is different enough that this relationship is working out pretty well (let's take bets on the number of people that comment on this, rather than the question). Anyway, before I went down the rabbit hole of building this, I wanted to see if anyone else had already invented this wheel yet. Basically a mechanism where Desktop can directly communicate with a Code instance running on the same machine. For reference, what I already have working is Desktop having access to Code's conversation history and sending messages to Code via a bridge file. In the late 90s/early 00s, I was obsessed with all sorts of niche sports sims, management sims, etc. Tiny games you'd buy off a Tripod site where you emailed the dev for your unlock code. I went down a rabbit hole recently trying to find one through the Wayback Machine, cold messaging old devs, even tracking down the guy who wrote the manual. Wrote about it here. Going through all that reminded me how much fun indie gaming was on the early internet. Just random studios with dreams and a funky website. Fast forward to present, I regularly use Claude for work/productivity, but it never occurred to me to try and make my own game. I decided to give it a shot and it has been incredibly fun. I used Claude as my primary coding partner to build Track Star, a text-based track and field career sim. It's the kinda game I would've been downloading off an Angelfire site 25 years ago, brought up to present day. I brought the design, the choices, the formulas, the math and Claude filled in the gaps in my Python knowledge beatifully. Been using Claude Pro for a few months and recently started digging into Claude Code and the skills ecosystem. Went down a rabbit hole on GitHub and found some repos that genuinely changed my workflow. The big ones for me: Repomix (repomix.com) - packs your entire project into one file so Claude gets full context instead of you copy pasting individual files. Game changer for anyone working on anything with more than a handful of files. Everything Claude Code (128k stars) - massive collection of 136 skills, 30 agents, 60 commands. I didn't even know half of these features existed in Claude Code until I found this. Dify - open source visual workflow builder with 130k stars. You can self host it so nothing leaves your machine. Relevant right now given the Perplexity data sharing lawsuit. Marketing Skills by Corey Haines - 23 skills for SEO, copywriting, email sequences, CRO. Not developer focused which is rare in this space. View originalScaled my Haiku→Sonnet pipeline to 2,000+ items. Three things that broke.
A couple weeks ago I posted about using Haiku as a gatekeeper before Sonnet to cut API costs by ~80%. A lot of people had questions about how it holds up at scale, so here's the update. Quick context: I run a platform called PainSignal (painsignal.net, free to use) that ingests real comments from workers and business owners, filters out noise, and classifies what's left into structured app ideas with industries, categories, severity scores, and revenue models. When I posted last time I had about 60 problems classified. Now I'm at 2,164 across 92 industries. Here's what changed as the data grew. 1. The taxonomy got weird. I let Sonnet create industries and categories dynamically instead of using a predefined list. At 60 items this felt magical. At 2,000+ it started creating near-duplicates and edge cases. "Auto Repair" and "Automotive Electronics" as separate industries. "Shop Management Software" showing up as a category, which is a solution, not a problem type. I even ended up with a "null" industry containing 16 problems that slipped through with no classification at all. The fix isn't to switch to a static list. The dynamic approach still surfaces categories I never would have thought of. Instead I'm building a normalization layer that runs periodically to merge duplicates and catch misclassifications. Think of it like a cleanup crew that runs after the creative work is done. 2. Sonnet hedges too much at scale. When you're generating a handful of app concepts, Sonnet's cautious language is fine. When you're generating over a thousand, you start to notice patterns. Every market size estimate gets a "potentially" or "could be." Every risk rating lands in the middle. The outputs start feeling like they were written by a consultant who bills by the hour. I've been reworking prompts to force sharper calls. Explicit instructions to commit to a rating, pick a number, name the risk directly. I also started injecting web search results before the analysis step so Sonnet has real competitive data to anchor against instead of generating everything from its training data alone. The difference in output quality is noticeable. 3. Haiku needed a bouncer. The original pipeline sent everything to Haiku first. But a surprising amount of input is obviously not a real complaint. Single emoji reactions, "great video," bare URLs, strings under 15 characters. Haiku handles these fine but it's still a fraction of a cent per call, and those fractions add up at volume. I added a regex pre-filter that catches the obvious junk before anything hits the API. Emoji-only messages, single words, URLs without context, extremely short strings. Estimated savings: another 20-30% off the Haiku bill. Maybe 50 lines of code and it runs in microseconds. So the full pipeline now looks like: regex filter → Haiku gate → Sonnet extraction. Three layers, each one cheaper and faster than the next, each one catching a different type of noise. Still running on BullMQ with Redis for queue management and PostgreSQL with pgvector for storage. Still building the whole thing with Claude Code, which continues to be underrated for iterative backend work. Happy to dig into any of these if people have questions. So I got tired of my coding agent having the long-term memory of a goldfish and the research skills of someone who only reads the first Google result. I figured — what if the agent could just… go study things on its own? While I sleep? Turns out you can build this and it's slightly cursed. Here's what happens: On a schedule, a background pipeline wakes up, checks what you're actively working on, and goes full grad student. Brave Search for sources, Firecrawl to scrape the good stuff, Gemini to synthesize a report, then it quietly files it into memory at an importance level high enough that it's guaranteed to show up next time you talk to your agent. No "maybe the cosine similarity gods will bless us today." It's just there. The part I'm unreasonably proud of: it's task-aware. Running multiple agents? The researcher checks what they're all doing and biases toward that. Your dev agent is knee-deep in auth middleware refactoring? The researcher starts reading about auth patterns. It even joins the group chat — registers on a shared bus, sends heartbeats ("Searching...", "Scraping 3 articles...", "Synthesizing..."), and announces when it's done. It's basically the intern who actually takes notes at standups. No API keys? It doesn't care. Falls back to Yahoo Search and local parsing. Zero cloud required. I also added a reentrancy guard because the first time I manually triggered it during a scheduled run, two synthesis pipelines started arguing with each other and I decided that was a problem for present-me, not future-me. Other recent rabbit holes: Ported Google's TurboQuant to pure TypeScript — my laptop now stores millions of memories instead of "a concerning number that was approaching my disk limit" Built a correction system. You tell the agent it's wrong, it remembers. Forever. It's like training a very polite dog that never forgets where you hid the treats One command reclaims 90% of old memory storage. Dry-run by default because I am a coward who previews before deleting Local SQLite, pure TypeScript, works with Claude/Cursor/Windsurf/Gemini/any MCP client. So I'm struggling with what done is, or what done enough is to launch. I've been working on a thing for probably a year now and feel like i'm close to launching. Close meaning, l've got a domain, l've deployed to aws, i've sent the site through testing/remediation loops, stripe is setup, I ran it through security testing (i caught/remediated the localstorage 'feature'). It has a dashboard but my thought is to launch it with mcp & a2a as the primary access, and add a cli interface post launch. Next I'm struggling with the codebase, do I opensource it with a BSL 1.1 license so I can offer the cloud services while allowing individual non competing uses. I don't want a csp to just take the oss/bsl and create a new service around it, at least not without helping me out with the kids college tuition. Or if instead of showing the code maybe release and sdk (ts/pyton/rust). I mean claude code is still closed source with an open sdk. (i'm not comparing my project to cc, or myself to anthropic.) Then the popular convention is "what people say, if you aren't embarrassed by your first release you waited too long". And the FREE TRIAL. I don't have a vc and am bootstrapping this myself so free isn't free. This goes back to the oss/bsl people could test using that version of the product locally to get a feel for its value, while the cloud hosting offering would cost because it cost me. Then there's pricing i'm mostly pricing based on a bucket of usage + an uptick on my cost. Then I can also see the roadmap of what else i have to do, but i'm ruthlessly beating back the squirrels and rabbit holes that point out new features. I even have a few lines in my CLAUDE.md about staying on track and pushing the new an shinny to post launch. So i'm really wonder where is launch. I want to be one of those launches that got the security right, at least the obvious issues, respected my users, protected their trust, and genuinely provided value to the community.
