STEM scientist wants to start using Claude to juggle multiple projects- anyone has an experience?
Hi, I am a postdoctoral researcher in molecular biology, and I have multiple projects that I need to take care of. Recently, it has been extremely overwhelming as I keep a log of all the projects in a Word document and update them every week so that I do not forget what to do and when, and what is being done in the meantime at collaborators' site and so on. The mental load is really a lot, and I have been really stressed out by it. I also need to write a critical review article, and I believe that a proper deep dive from Claude would make it much, much easier. Are there any scientists here for whom Claude was a huge help in a similar scenario? I would really appreciate you sharing your experience and potential tips and advice. Thanks so much! Hey everyone, I recently cancelled my yearly GitHub Copilot subscription. My old workflow was simple: I used the GitHub Copilot extension in VS Code, but I swapped the backend model to Sonnet / Opus and relied heavily on the /plan command to code. I absolutely loved it and I would like that exact flow back. My plan was to just go full Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) inside VS Code using an API key and pay per token for Sonnet or Opus. However, I’m seeing all this hype around CLI tools, and it has me second-guessing my setup. I’m completely open to trying new workflows if they are a massive upgrade, but honestly, I’d be much happier just staying in my cozy VS Code environment if the math makes sense. so my questions are: Is a flat Claude subscription actually cheaper than an API key for heavy coding? In my old copilot plan I believe just once I used all my tokens per month. How bad is the token bleed if I stick to BYOK? Tagged as productivity because without your health, what can you do? All of a sudden, I just felt tired, and I had this banging headache. I thought, okay. It's just a headache. And then I got home, and I knew it was more. Looking back now, it was a combination of many things, but one of the core constants was the way of my work had changed over the last 12 months. And I think it just caught up with me. Until the beginning of this year I'd been working away as a IT consultant. I had a project, working for a medical company that had gone on for about two years, and I was building (mostly internal) AI solutions. During that time I'd seen an influx of AI and personally, as I'm sure many of you have, have increased the amount of sessions and context switching. However, since recent waves of Claude, this seemed somewhat manageable to me, or at least the full effects hadn't kicked in yet... Then at the beginning of this year the project finished and I was on my own working on my own projects. Great! Right? Well, maybe. There's freedom, a lot of freedom but no team signing off each day, no expectations to work on certain projects at certain times. Maybe it was just time management I thought. So I decided to just work when I was feeling good, but this didn't really work because I felt like I needed to make this work for myself. Hustle now, chill later. There were maybe five or six different projects on at a time, and even now tbh, and I was context switching between all of them. Then not only that, i was drifting in and out of reddit or playing chess as a break (which is a terrible idea fyi - speaking to myself!). It almost felt like i was slowly drifting into exhaustion but because it was only one more prompt to write it was hard to see. I think this had such a bigger impact on me than I realized. Disclaimer: obviously i'm not a (Reddit) doctor and this isn't advice, but It felt important to share this post in an effort to help people understand the early signs I was having, how to recover, and what I'm now doing going forward. I took some time to order these into the order they first appeared. So I went home and the girl I'm seeing looked after me whilst I was basically non-verbal. She said it was nice because I'm usually so self-sufficient (thanks Claude). We did the obligatory AI checks, they all agreed, I needed rest (physically and mentally) and re-hydration. What I did was stay in a cool house, NO INTERACTIONS with Claude after the initial research (which was somewhat annoying tbh), went to bed and could hardly sleep at all in the beginning but I was reseting my dopamine system (I think) and only came out for water, dehydration tablets and food. The aftermath: I would have been easy to pass this off as a fever or whatever, but I took a long hard look at what was happening and realised I had to look after myself more (if only to spend more quality time with Claude). But seriously, now I'm starting each day away from the computer and each session with a clear plan (also away from the computer), time boxing sessions to work on single tasks and taking smaller breaks in-between, if there's dead time whilst the agent is working - I'll clean the dishes I was ignoring or grab the clothes drying for 4 days (you get the point), for reddit I'm using a custom tool to avoid too much time on the platform (still love you boo) and overall just paying attention more to myself and my needs. Sorry this has gone on a bit long. I was poking around the HTTP traffic between Claude Code and Anthropic with a local proxy I built, and noticed those “Try: fix lint errors” style suggestions aren’t just frontend UI. Each one appears to be its own POST to api.anthropic.com/v1/messages, with a separate system prompt, its own message history, and a separate roundtrip. The system prompt literally starts with [SUGGESTION MODE: Suggest what the user might naturally type next into Claude Code.] The request used the same model I had selected for the main agent. In this case, that was claude-opus-4-7, with 50,484 input tokens and 12 output tokens for one hint. I’m on the Pro flat-rate plan, so I’m not billed per request, but priced like the public API this would be roughly $0.08 per suggestion. Probably obvious to people who have already inspected this stuff, but it made me realize how much “magic UI behavior” in cloud-hosted agents is just extra model calls happening behind the scenes that you never see unless you intercept the traffic. Running Pro subscription here, incredibly frustrated by this, admittedly my prompt is decently long (i already asked other LLMs to optimise it to consume as little claude tokens as possible) and I wanted it to contruct an excel document (be it with two reference docs), but by the time the error message shows up, it has already eating up 75% of the session's usage. Followed up with 'Continue exactly where you left off. Do not re-read or summarise prior context. Resume from the last incomplete section and proceed forward.' But after a while, all tokens were eating up and it stopped again. Just wanted to know what is the best way to counter this? Any sort of settings i need to know? Is my follow up prompt correct? Ideally I want my prompt to be executed in one go, thanks! I have a problem though which is if someone other than myself, (including bots) raises a pr, the code review action crashes with permissions issues. Does anyone know how I can get this to work? Currently I have a workaround where I've also added a manual trigger to the workflow, and if I trigger it, it is fine because I'm the actor of that workflow. In a chat today, gpt said this: "shower, food, short walk, pet the cats, sit outside, one song" pet the cats. Some context - GPT had a memory that I had cats when I asked it to write a small poem about them. This was close to 2 years ago. Last christmas I found out that it had saved that info and deleted all memories it had of me - including the memory of the cats. So it's been a couple of months since the memories were deleted. It shouldn't reference that ever, it shouldn't know about it. That is according to OpenAI's public facing documentation. I know nothing gets truly deleted, it's just hidden/unlinked from us when we "hit delete". After asking it about it, it said this: I mixed in something from memory that wasn’t relevant here. My bad. Drop that part. When I told it I had deleted all the memories, it added a new memory that said: Forget any saved information about the user having cats named... I dunno why I'm sharing this, it probably happens to everyone. I just found it curious. I'll probably be closing my account and moving to an offline model. My workflows are incredibly context heavy with large files spanning code, research reports, and other analysis. I do not, or rather did not as the platform has been non functional since November 2025 meanwhile customer support is auto closing tickets, admitting I am having platform issues. I do not use this platform for casual queries, as a solo developer with no formal "team" chatgpt was one of my reliable co collaboration hubs to help ensure I am maintaining proper development of said complex systems. I feed it massive codebases for systems analysis and obtaining new insights I may personally have missed. My manual code uploads and token inputs routinely exceed the model's output volume by a massive margin. I do not abuse this platform. It is actually impossible as the very features advertised under the paid subscription do not work. I am exactly the type of user this platform was built for, and I have been a continuous, paying ChatGPT Plus subscriber since January 2025. Since October 2025, my workspace has been systematically breaking and beginning November 2025 total workspace degredation. This was not an occasional glitch. Persistent memory modules stopped updating. Custom instructions were ignored by the models. Project files failed to load. Custom instructions, personalization features, connector abilities, file tool, even projects do not work. It started as a continuous degradation until total failure. OpenAI customer service even admitted as such and yet months later I've talked to nothing but bots, not only LLMs as customer service but even instances of falsely identifying as true human support. It was a state of rolling degradation across the entire paid tier, month after month. Meanwhile OpenAI freely has enhanced for businesses and enterprise tiers. I have not just rapid complained to standard support. I ran and obtained cross platform diagnostics, failure logs. I even documented and told oai customer support the exact replication steps only to be met with acknowledgement of degredation with no resolution. I handed OpenAI support a completely packaged technical breakdown of their failing infrastructure across 20 separate support tickets over a 7 month period. I did their QA work for free. And I have the receipts to prove it. I am attaching the screenshots and the exact email files to this post. In Case 06830839, OpenAI Support explicitly put this in writing: "We acknowledge that you have been experiencing persistent technical issues affecting several features of your ChatGPT subscription, including tools, memory functions, personalization settings, connectors, and project files... We also understand your concern that communication on the case stopped after you provided detailed evidence..." Read that again. They acknowledged in writing that my account was fundamentally broken. They acknowledged that their own team ghosted me after I handed them the diagnostic proof. Yet they kept charging my card every single month for a product they knew was failing. The Hijack Escalation: Two days ago, the situation escalated from a broken product to a severe security incident. I was monitoring my environment and watched my Codex rate limits drop in 10 percent chunks across 2 seperate sessions on a fresh boot of the desktop app. This happened twice inside a 10 minute window. I had zero active sessions running. There was zero usage on my end. My account token was being actively drained by an unauthorized third party exploit. I immediately opened an emergency unauthorized activity report under Case 09113391 to notify them of the hack. Their response was to totally reframe this problem as disputing fraudulent activity trying to do damage control of the situation and altering the record. The Reframe Attempts: Instead of investigating the breach, OpenAI support deliberately twisted the record. They not only deliberately reframed my security report as an "appeal for fraud." They manipulated the ticket classification to make it look like I had been flagged for fraud and was begging for an appeal, rather than a developer reporting a live exploit on their infrastructure. They ignored the active threat their own platform was exposing. They did not lock the token. They did not roll my API keys. They did absolutely nothing to secure a compromised paying user other than shift the blame. Fast forward to this morning, their automated Trust and Safety system swept the high volume traffic from the attacker, scored it as a malicious exploit originating from my account, and deactivated/banned me for "Cyber Abuse." All the while actively preventing chatgpt models from helping me try to disgnose and trace the infiltration. They locked the doors and blamed the homeowner for the break in.
